I had jury duty today, but was dismissed after 3 hours of sitting around studing "The Art of Argument" (a snorefest, but I needed to read two chapters before class tonight) and working my way through the absolutely outstanding fourth Blanche White mystery by BarbaraNeeley (her preferred spelling, I didn't accidentally leave out a space). When I walked back to work I noticed what a gorgeous day it was. How very unfair, the one day I don't have lunch and it's extremely summery.

There wasn't much to do when I arrived at the office. Work has been glacial lately. I hope the pace picks up a little in September. It should, actually, once the school year goes into effect and everyone suddenly realizes they have to book Thanksgiving and Christmas travel.

I would like to know, incidentally, why it is so damn hard to get a decently priced hotel or car rental in Calgary. It's like a gold rush town up there, I swear. And I was totally shocked to hear a Canadian, the very one for whom I was booking hotel and car in Calgary, describe Canada completely without irony as the "51st State." I think he's wrong in numerous ways, but I try not to argue with my clients. If they want to be boneheads it's not my job to educate them or acquaint them with the cluestick. Well, not about that sort of thing, anyway.

Tonight in Philosophy I successfully presented a statement with two premises and a conclusion arrived at by inductive reasoning as to why we should have a break. The professor laughed and I was the hero of the class. I walked around and talked to people on the break after getting an orange juice to keep me awake. One of them came to talk to me after class was out while I was waiting for John to pick me up, and the professor waved goodbye as he walked to the parking lot. I've never been very engaged with my class as a whole in previous semesters. I think it's a good change, and it's certainly charming to see how people react to friendliness. Everyone likes to have someone else make the first move.

The house seems very quiet again. Keiko is still a bit jumpy. I have just exchanged email with Gina Goddard in Australia about rubber stamps (we are both collectors) which has inspired me to make time to sit down with my stamps soon, perhaps over Labor Day Weekend. A little stamp art therapy would be just the thing to ease my heart.
