I've been reading the collected letters of Jane Austen. The overwhelming impression from reading large quantities of the private Austen is that she was unremittingly sarcastic and frequently cynical about everyone outside her family. She can be cruel for the sake of a good line, a habit I've succumbed to myself more than once.

I don't think I'm generally cruel or habitually cynical, but there are some people who equate a sharp wit and a quick tongue with being scary. Too bad. It comes with the territory. Myself, I like people who are quick and witty. A personality and an ego the size of Brooklyn isn't necessarily a strike against someone in my book. It does mean I have to be careful about whom I invite to parties, since egos that large tend to clash, but I've always had a knack for throwing good parties, and it usually works out. Besides, when it doesn't it gives everyone else something exciting to talk about. I know the value of good gossip.

Without any good gossip to keep me from thinking of my own problems, I spent the weekend feeling somewhat oppressed by not knowing anything about my immediate future. Fearful and angry at the same time, I worked on silencing the inner critic, doing breathing exercises, revising wildly speculative statements to simply factual, and all that good stuff. My reward was immediate, although I realize this is pure coincidence. M.I.T. contacted John yesterday about his availability for an interview. Yes! Yes! Boston, please god and all the saints send me to Boston and not Salt Lake City! Give John a job! Save me from going back to work!

Just to appease my sense of justice, I went through the classified ads and picked out a few places to send resumes. Unfortunately, there weren't any leisure agent openings in the travel section, only corporate agents. I think I'd rather do generic administrative work than deal with the intense pressure of that section of the industry. The actual reservations work is not difficult, but it's high volume and very, well, corporate. Yucko. I prefer to send people on vacations. Nonetheless, I'll consider it, especially if I'm only looking for 3-6 months worth of work.

Resumes. Good lord. I need paper. Time to visit Office Town.
