I saw Rent tonight. I liked it very much. I can't quite understand why it's supposed to be so very different from regular music theater, it seemed pretty classically presented to me. You know, bursting into song and all that. My favorite part was Maureen's performance piece. I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes when she went through the business with Elsie the Cow as spiritual guide. She ends the performance encouraging the audience to "Moo with me!" It was a great moment. Denise and I went for a drink at the hotel across the street afterwards. It's the Ramada at 8th and Market, and it is fabulous. There's Tiffany glass everywhere, fine marble, beautiful carvings and all sorts of Belle Epoque design elements. We lingered over our one drink talking about all the fashion mistakes we saw at the show, and followed it up with a visit to Wendy's. Hey, we hadn't eaten since lunchtime, and nobody else was open at a quarter to 11. It was great, we talked and laughed and enjoyed ourselves. It is a profound pleasure to have a good friend like Denise. I suggested we go to the theater for her birthday every year. I think it would make a good tradition. I spent most of the weekend successfully redoing my rose beds. What a pain, literally. The soil is heavy clay, and it's so much trouble to dig it up and amend it that I may give up and go for a series of raised beds instead. I can't get much further down than eight inches before I hit a rock hard compacted layer that no shovel will get through. My back is sore from trying. So, although I'll finish the rose bed I've dug out, I think I'll look into getting some timbers and building up from instead of into the earth. Meanwhile, the rest of the yard looks great. I took photos, I'll post them in the garden journal in the next day or two.
Cross your fingers for me, I find out tomorrow about my grade in Biology. Think "A, A, A!"
