Although I usually don't believe it's possible I actually had too much sushi tonight. Well, maybe it was the large bottle of Asahi and the soft shell crab that did me in. At any rate, I'm feeling celebratory, and when I celebrate I want to eat sushi. Work was nicely paced today, and there were no emergencies. I am totally caught up with my paperwork, my mailings, my returned messages and emails. And tomorrow's Friday. Huzzah!

My poor office mate Marley tried to be nice to me today by offering to photocopy recipes from her latest food magazine, specifically a low fat shrimp and pasta recipe. I told her I hated low fat anything, and anyway I didn't cook. This is not strictly true, of course. I cook at least once a week. But I don't really enjoy cooking. It's fun on occasion, it's nice to make dishes I like, but I'm not particularly interested in experimenting with food. I'm also a bit of a purist when it comes to mixing up ingredients. For instance, I feel jalapenos and other hot peppers have no business on a pizza, and I dislike mixing sweet and salt tastes such as salt on grapefruit or watermelon.

I used to like cooking, back when John and I first lived together. I enjoyed baking especially. My copy of the Cake Bible comes from that period, and I have many photos of my first pies and cheesecakes. Somewhere along the line I lost interest in it, though. This sure seems to happen to me a lot. Passionate for five years about some hobby, then boom. Some of my interests are perennial: classical music, foreign languages, animals, writing, traveling, science fiction, shoes. I have been totally interested in all of those since I was a tyke.

I tried using my facility with languages tonight, in fact, when I ordered my Asahi beer at Masa's. Unfortunately, my gaijin accent made it sound like I wanted a large sake. After we got that straightened out I settled back in my new black Ranma 1/2 t-shirt and told Spike and Tom about the new book I'm reading. It's Steven Leigh's 1998 novel Dark Water's Embrace. Michael Rawdon recommended it Sunday at the baseball game, and it's triff. Any book that qualifies for a Tiptree Award is right up my alley, usually. I'll try to review it once I've finished it, okay?

The snapdragons will be blooming soon, probably this weekend. A snail ate one of my dahlias but the others are thriving. The mimula is making a new blossom; I'm thrilled with its spikey little leaves and exotic blooms. The corn lilies are six inches high. All of the columbine are putting out new leaves. The older columbine is wreathed in color from all the flowerheads. The new geranium is a vivid burst of color with new clusters of flowers opening every day. I'm really pleased with my tiny garden. The pets have stayed well out since I put up my fence. Smart creatures. Now, if only I could train the squirrels and birds to stop burying nuts in the unplanted space.

Ah, Friday. Payday Friday at that. Sunshine and warm weather, too. Man, life is good.
