The things we do for love of baseball. I spent three hours yesterday in a chilly, shaded stadium with the wind blowing steadily throughout the game and came home with my ear throbbing again. Boy, I am not a fan of the Oakland Coliseum's scoreboard. It's hard to read, badly laid out, and doesn't include enough information. I like knowing who's pitching as well as the batting order, and I also love seeing how fast the balls are being thrown. Excuse me while I thump my cane a minute. Anyway, the game was fun to watch though the pitching was fairly junky. The A's were down 0-8 in the fourth inning, battled back to tie it up in the 8th, and lost at the very last minute. Our seats were quite decent along the first base line. Michael and I talked baseball pretty much nonstop throughout the game. Although there were six other people with us we couldn't really chat with them because of the wind and the seating arrangement. All hail Janice Murray for buying a round of hot chocolate just as we were starting to be seriously uncomfortable. Next time I go to an A's game I'll sit on the other side of the stadium and bask in the sun. You know, I'm complaining a lot considering I really did have an excellent time at the game. The problem was I wasn't very comfortable during it. The ear was annoying me, and the cold was tedious, but what made it tough was I had thrown my back out a couple of hours before the game while watering my plants. I wasn't actually doing anything but standing still when I suddenly felt a disc slip out of place and zing! Major pain. Major, major stiffness. Much stifled groaning when standing up and sitting down, and of course one does a lot of that at a baseball game what with the cheering and the going to get beer and pretzels, etc. I'm still pretty stiff but the pain is greatly reduced today. What really annoys me is I just saw my new chiropractor on Friday. I hate to go back so soon because I pay for the sessions, it's not covered by my insurance. Yes, I have a new one. I wasn't very happy with the fellow who took over Dr. Bob's practice, he was so unhealthy-looking and smelled of alcohol once or twice. The new one is my bosses' chiropractor whom I had been to once in an emergency and really liked. Now I can finally see him because his new office is one train stop up the track. He's terrific, very much a sports medicine kind of guy, not a New Age type at all. You are fascinated, I can tell. Well, listen, you have to be careful about who you let work on your body. If your doctor reeks of booze you don't want him touching your spine. But it's a minimum of $80 to start over with a new one because they all make you get a physical and fill out paperwork and so on. It's not cheap to look for a new chiropractor. Dr. Jim waived the initial fee which made me feel even more sure I've found the right doctor. I lost my mind and ate a lot of meat this weekend. Friday night I had the stuffed pork chop at Teske's instead of crepes. Man, it was outstanding. Technically I think pork is okay per my doctor - I'm supposed to avoid red meat. But I was trying to avoid all meat and I totally failed. I had a Marzen dog from the Gordon Biersch stand during the ballgame, and I had a hamburger for dinner with bacon and avocado just to make it insanely bad for me. It was a seriously meaty couple of days. And now I'm feeling bulky and Germanic. It's been a long weekend in some ways. Friday and Saturday were quite busy, but I slept a good portion of Sunday in between loads of laundry and working in my garden. I packed up three bags of clothing for Goodwill. I cleaned the house and made curry for dinner. John mowed the lawn and I trimmed all the edges. The back yard seemed so big and empty. I kept thinking about Dixie, and how much I miss having her around. Our life seems quiet without her even though she spent most of her time outside. I still don't want to get another dog right now, but I think we probably will some day. We both love dogs and the household seems curiously unbalanced without one. I've lived with dogs most of my life. They're so much fun to be around.
And they help me stay in shape with all the walks. Oofah, I'm stiff.
