Aha! I was right. Christmas Marvel tulips are, according to Van Bourgondien's help desk, a cherry pink. Who named them so misleadingly? They aren't red and green, or red and white, and tulips don't bloom at Christmas unless you force them, so I don't get it.

I dreamt I ate the ixia bulbs like popcorn. I assume this is because yesterday I remembered ixia are planted in the spring, not the fall, and I have to find someplace for them to winter over. They do look kind of tasty.

I have 25 dark blue Siberian squill, 6 cherry pink tulips, 25 rose and white checkered fritillaria, and four dark red astilbe left to plant. Argh. I'd better see if anyone still has bright yellow early-flowering daffodil bulbs left. They can go in with the squill, and I'll put the tulips in with the fritillaria, and I guess the astilbe can be top-planted with violets or something since they're dormant right now. Then I'm done for the season. Really. Columbine! Miriam! Come back!

Today was Stanford's Big Game. There is no tradition of building enormous, unstable bonfires like Texas does, so no one died. The Cardinal won, which means they're going to the Rose Bowl. Who will they be playing? The Wisconsin Badgers. No divided loyalties in our house, though. I'm not a fan of football, and I feel no particular fondness for Stanford aside from their very fine women's volleyball team which played their final home game Friday night, and won. Now they are assured a spot in the NCAA playoffs, and will almost certain host one of the conference games. I'm looking forward to it, although I'm glad to be nearly done with those horrible bleacher seats. Even with a cushion I get Sports Butt by the end of the season.

Next week should be nice and quiet. Anyone who hasn't bought a ticket to go home for Thanksgiving is out of luck, so I don't expect many calls. Most of the business trips for the week after are already booked, and a lot of people take off on Tuesday so Wednesday I plan to do some serious Web browsing and maybe shop for Christmas presents online. We've invited Bill and Julie Humphries over for turkey dinner on Thursday, our first Thanksgiving guests in many years. I'm ready for my four day weekend. I'm looking forward to a pleasant combination of friendly company, sleeping in, puttering around, and working on my Christmas cards. The house will be scented with cinnamon, and cranberry, and fresh bread, and pumpkin pie, and fragrant candles, and very likely wet dog since it looks to be raining next week. All the comforts of home.

Plus fresh roasted ixia if I don't find some space in the closet for them.
