I know no one believes we have true seasons here in Northern California, but we do. While it's true we have palm trees and citrus trees we also have several types of oak and other deciduous trees so it's impossible to miss certain signs of change. I was startled last week to see a row of trees with deep red foliage, well advanced in the cycle. Now I see the changes everywhere: more bare branches, the bronzing of the hills, the fogs of summer no longer slipping over the hills and gliding across the bay. It's autumn, and the good weather is back. I'm still compulsively playing the Sims, but the computer's memory is sorely taxed, so I need to beef it up if I'm going to play without having to reboot every other night. John is slightly amused, having seen me go through this kind of obsession with MOOs back in 1995. I figure I'll burn out on it soon and cut back to occasional playing; I give it a month or so.
A plan to triple the size of the church next door has been averted at tonight's Planning Commission session. John attended and spoke against it (he spoke for me as well since I was in class). They wanted to add two lots' worth of meeting space but only 27 new parking spaces. They legally ought to have 99 spaces now for their size, but only provide 10; parking is a nightmare every Sunday on this street. The new building would have been wholly out of character with the small homes in this neighborhood, and they have no business expanding without providing more parking. Shuttles from a city parking lot won't cut it, they completely block the street when it's parked up on both sides as is normal on the weekends. The church can try again, and will. We have done our civic duty. I hope they got the message.
