Ten years ago I wrote a biography of Pam Wells for the programme book of Britain's 1992 Eastercon (their national science fiction convention) where she was a Guest of Honor. The bio was called More Than Chocolate and was a wry, fond recollection of the highlights of our association over the years. To my chagrin it appeared under the byline of Jeanne Bowman, i.e., someone else entirely, so I published it myself in a fanzine in 1994 to set the record straight. It forms part of the collection of my fanwriting recently published by Kim Huett, in fact. I'm still very fond of it because it reminds me of what good times we had. It turns out Kim asked Pam to write the intro for my collection and she said yes. Since she didn't quite get it to him on deadline he wrote his own introduction, and that's all I knew of it until today when I got a birthday card from her and the enclosed Lost Introduction reproduced below.
Introductions and convention biographies are like looking in a mirror at the back of your head. Has that cowlick always been there? Is this how I appear to everyone without knowing it? There's no shortage of people ready to tell you what's wrong with you. Hearing about what's right is an unalloyed pleasure. Loyal, honest, brave and true. Who wouldn't like to be described thusly? Thank you, Pam. What a wonderful birthday present. |
