A year ago this month we bought our first house. Three years ago this month I started my job at The Agency That Never Shuts Up. Five years ago this month John was denied tenure at Vanderbilt and going home became an option. March is obviously an outstandingly lucky month for me. It's well into spring now. The weather is soft and warm at last, each morning more perfect than the last. Hot, bright days are scented by flowering trees and fragrant jasmine, and the mild blue twilights heralded by frog song. I have spring fever, but I'm keeping it under control until Friday when I take off early from work to attend the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show. Denise and I are going to squeal in happiness as we roam the five acres of displays and booths and spend all our money on plants. They have full scale garden mock-ups there, you know. We're talking bulldozer action. Trees! Waterfalls! Ponds! Paths! Each show garden has a fancy and occasionally inexplicable name like "Gifts of Helios" and "A Remark You Made," just like show dogs do. I bet at home they refer to "Gifts of Helios" as Buddy. At any rate, I am totally psyched for it. And why am I writing tonight when I expected to be turning in my midterm in Biology? Class was cancelled due to rolling blackouts. A slightly worried looking PG&E guy was at the top of the hill where the road narrows before turning into the campus parking lot, lights flashing on his orange truck, telling everyone to go home. I was really happy to have my evening back. I'm doing several thousand loads of laundry (okay, five) while getting caught up on some chores and finishing a piece of writing that is due at the end of the week. Since I'm going to Las Vegas with Shelly this weekend I need to get that polished and sent off asap. Ooh! Las Vegas! I'm excited about that, too. 24 hours of living inside a pinball machine and running around like maniacs. We're going to see Cirque du Soleil's "O" and we have killer seats because I am really good at getting good seats for shows. Remember that in case you need me to get you good seats sometime. Shelly's also going to see Blue Man Group, but I'm going to check out as many hotels as I can while she's busy with that. I have to see Bellagio, the Venetian, the Hilton's Paris, the new Aladdin, the Stratosphere, New York New York, and several smaller casinos up and down the strip. 24 hours is just barely enough time. I haven't been to Vegas since 1995, and the only hotels I really remember are the MGM, the Luxor, Excalibur, Treasure Island, Caesar's, and the Mirage. It's amazing how much has changed in five years.
But then, that's always true.
