My brother gets out of jail tomorrow. He has served three years out of his four year sentence, originally five but commuted to four for some reason unknown to me. His parole officer has been to the house, he has a job set up with a family friend who owns a farm, and my father and stepmother are there to help him make the transition. He's paid the price for his non-violent crime. I am still so angry at a justice system that would punish marijuana possession with three years in jail. I can't imagine what those years have done to him. If we're lucky, it simply taught him not to rely on hare-brained get-rich-quick schemes like transporting marijuana in his car for "a friend."
If we're not, it hardly bears thinking about.
