![]() ![]() ![]() Saturday was a long, weird day. Aside from joining Michael at Cafe Borrone for a pleasant two hours of coffee and chat I didn't do anything but deal with pain, or recover from pain. And buy baby presents: I was absolutely delighted to hear Diane delivered a girl, Miss Sophia Siobhan Adler, formerly known as Bug. Congratulations, Diane and Darin! Good luck getting anyone to spell Siobhan correctly! No doubt that's why it's her middle name. And you people thought Schuyler was a toughie. I'd be a lot more bummed about going back to work tomorrow if I didn't have another three day weekend coming up. Friday I fly to Seattle to attend Corflu: The Fanzine Fans Convention with about a hundred of my best friends, including ten or so from Britain. I'll be appearing on a panel, something I generally go out of my way to avoid, but this is Corflu, so no one's expecting an expert, only amusement. The weather will probably be lousy, but I plan to leave the hotel long enough to go see my dear friend Janice Murray's new house. And maybe I'll finally take that detour to Mercer Island and drive by the old places. Boy, I remember when I thought I'd never be able to get over the misery of living there. It stuck with me for about five years after high school, then dropped into oblivion. Now, I can't even remember who any of the people are listed in the class of 1975 at classmates.com, with the exception of Suzanne Sourbeer who was my best friend from second grade onwards. I'm certainly not going to pay money to get in contact with vaguely recalled faces from 25 years ago, although I think they have a neat idea in general.
I would, however, pay a lot of money to see some of the people I was in college with. Gilda, Sandra, Mia, Joan, Rose, Phil, Pete, John, Rick; all the snotty pianists, all the goofy horn players, all the party-mad violinists, and of course my choral conducting professors, though most of them are probably no longer there. I had a marvelous time being a music major. A pity large state universities don't lend themselves to keeping in touch with classmates. I've talked to Mia Rose Wu this year. The rest I lost touch with long ago. Maybe if I'd stayed in the Seattle area I'd still be able to find them through brothers, sisters, parents...but I never planned to stay, and neither did they.
