No turquoise house for us. We will not be living in the flight path from SFO, thank you. I'm a little bit sorry, as it was in many respects the perfect starter home. But that's okay. I would have hated the fog, too. I think we'll stick with San Bruno. Less fog, no direct overhead flights from jumbo jets every hour on the hour, no government-ordered noise abatement refitting of windows.

As a reward for looking at lots of houses we can't afford, don't want, or have decided not to make an offer on, we went to Kepler's bookstore and bought books. Yes! I know! You're amazed! Okay, maybe not. I felt a little guilty about buying books when I have ten hardcovers at home still to read, but I haven't been in the mood for a biography of Wellington (written in the '30s, and undoubtedly fulsome), several Charles de Lint books, Dave Barry's first novel, or slogging through the Civil War with Cold Mountain although I'm told it's an exceptionally good book.

So I indulged myself and bought two children's books: Moonintroll Midwinter by Tove Jansson, and Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell, both favorites from many years ago. They were both as good as I remember. I found an online guide to the Moomintroll characters. I just love the drawings. (You can see their influence on Patrick McDonnell's human characters in Mutts.) I also bought a replacement Christmas present for Kymm, which I've decided looks so good I may have to buy myself a copy. Finally, I snapped up the new Michaela Roessner which I've been trying to find for a month. A very good haul, and it mitigated the slight depression brought on by once again confronting the feeding frenzy that is the Bay Area housing market.

I swear to god you people have to put up with so much whining about housing. If we ever actually buy a house here I will throw an Open House and every one of my readers is invited.
